Sub-titled “Millennium
Memories”, this book takes a look at the last hundred years in the few
square miles around my home. Some of the people I have known, the events
that have occurred and the changes that have taken place are recorded to
the best of my recollection and knowledge, and I am proud and thankful to
have spent my life among the small towners and rustics in such
surroundings.
Many histories are written “from the top down”. Being my usual awkward
self, mine is written “from the bottom up”. I come from humble
surroundings, yet it seems to me that in the ordinary everyday people of
our land lies the real strength and integrity of our society.
I have found great satisfaction in the life I have led, which is in no way
spectacular but I venture to state that many people of wealth and station,
would, in retrospect, be happy to swap their life for mine. So this small
addition to the local history shelves is written with great affection for
those people mentioned and many who are not and also for the joys of the
countryside and the New Forest which I feel is my spiritual home, my
corner of England`s green and pleasant land. |
